Moros y Cristianos

Big cities, small villages they all have their own Moros y Cristianos festival. In the Valencia Region there are almost a hundred of these festivities, the most famous being the festival of Alcoi (Alcoy) between 22 and 24 April, when hundreds of locals dress up as Muslim or Christian soldiers, slaves, guild groups and town criers.

Most of the Moros y Cristianos festivals celebrate the liberation of Arab rule by king Juame I or a related theme. During the festivities, the different groups parade through different parts of the town, eventually coming together on the main square where a wooden fortress is build and impressive re-enactments take place.

After the Arabs are defeated and the city is freed, everybody celebrates another victory of the Christians (also the ones that where Arabs during the festivities) with a lot of beer drinking on the streets, fireworks, music and laughter until the early morning.
