La Tomatina de Bunyol (Buñol)

Every last Wednesday of August, the city of Buñol (near Valencia, Spain) is the host of the world's biggest tomato fight. Armed with tonnes of tomatoes, thousands of people will try to hit everything that moves.

There are several theories about the origin of this festival but nobody really knows how it started. The most reliable theory is that during the “Gigantes y Cabezudos” (Giants and people with big heads) parade in 1945 some people in the crowd started pushing the participants of the parade which led to a huge fight. Youngster decided to start throwing tomatoes from a nearby located vegetable stall to the fighting crowd. The following year at the same Wednesday of August youngsters brought their own tomatoes to the town square, starting a new battle.

Since then the festival has been banned several times (1950 and 1957 till 1959), but under pressure of the town citizens it became an official festival under supervision of the Town Hall. The Town Hall is now in charge of promoting the festival and has been supplying tonnes of tomatoes each year since 1980.

The fight is open for everyone that is not afraid of dirty clothes.
