Isla Tabarca
Valencia Connect > Travel > Islands > Isla Tabarca

Near to the cities of Alicante and San Pola lies the only island of Comunidad Valencia which is permanently inhabitant, Isla de Tabarca and has a more interesting history than present.

In the 1760s a small island belonging to Genoa (Italy) near Tunesia called Tabarka was conquered by Arabs. The Arabs imprisoned the entire population of the island until the king of Spain, Carlos III, negotiated their release and gave them this island to establish themselves on; originally the island was called “Neuva Tabarca”. Nowadays, you can still find some families with Italian family names living on the island.

The island has been declared a marine national reserve in 1964 and when you are in Alicante or San Palo you have to go for a short day trip to the island. Its clear waters make it a good place to go swimming and snorkelling and the short boat trip to get there is also a nice outing.
