Formentera
Valencia Connect > Travel > Islands > Formentera

The smallest of the 4 most famous islands is Formentera. Together with Ibiza these 2 islands are also known as the pine tree islands or Pityusen.  In different eras of the earth the island of Formentera lied below the water surface. The combination of water, cracks and fractures in the mainly limestone grounds of Formentera has resulted in many gaps, holes and drac caves.

The total surface of Formentera is 83m2, which is very small compared to the other islands (Mallorca 3640 km2, Menorca 702 km2 & Ibiza 541 km2). On some places the island is only 1,5 km wide. The island is divided in 2 parts by a 5 long km and 1,5 km wide sea bank and is almost as flat as a coin. The highest parts of the island are the 2 cliffs at both ends of the island and on top of them are 2 lighthouses build.

Because of the limited presence of accommodation on the island, many tourists visit the island only for a day trip from the island of Ibiza. A short boat trip, because the major harbours of both islands are only 11 sea miles separated from each other.
