Football in Valencia

Football (or Soccer) is on of the most popular sports in the world, especially in Europe. Every big city in Europe has at least one professional team. Valencia, the third city of Spain has 2 professional teams playing in different leagues: Valencia CF (playing in La Primera Division) and Levante (playing in La Segunda Division A). La Primera Division is the highest Spanish soccer competition and one of Europe’s strongest. From the end of August till mid May 20 teams play for the national championship of Spain, placements in European championships or regulation.

Valencia CF

Founded in 1919 Valencia CF is, and always has been, the first team of Valencia City. In its long existence Valencia CF has won many prices like 6 times the national championship, 3 times the UEFA Cup and were twice runner-up in the Champions League, the most prestigious tournament in Europe for club teams. The home games of Valencia CF are played in the Mastella stadium located west from the historic centre (metro 5; Aragon) and has a capacity of 55.000 people. The Mestalla stadium was build in 1923 and because it’s located in the centre of the city, there are not a lot of parking spaces and traffic jams are formed all around the stadium. For this reason, Valencia is working on a new stadium outside the city centre which, according to plan, will be finished in 2009. If you want to see a match of Valencia CF, keep in mind that tickets sell out extremely fast. If you’re not able to get a hold of a ticket, you could buy tickets at the “black market” around the stadium a couple of hours before the match. Downsides are that the prices are higher and it’s illegal, so you could get busted. A good alternative and much safer way to experience a bit of the enthusiasm of locals that are cheering for their number 1 team, is to go to a local bar or pub which broadcast the match on a wide screen and mingle in the crowd. You would almost start to think that you’re really their.

Levante UD

Founded in 1909 Levante UD is the oldest professional soccer team of Valencia City. Although the club is almost a hundred years old, they’ve never won any important prices. Last season (2004-2005) Levante played in La Primera Division for the first time after playing 40 consecutive years in La Segunda Division. Unfortunately, after playing 38 matches on the highest stage, they regulated back to La Segunda Division. Levante UD’s home games are played at the Ciudad de Valencia stadium located in the north of the city (metro 3; Machado) and has a capacity of almost 28.000 people. Tickets for home games of Levante UD are easier obtained than Valencia CF tickets, but don’t be surprised if the tickets are sold out when you arrive. Nice to know is that at the end of his career, one of the greatest soccer players of in history (next to Pelé and Maradona), Johan Cruijff played 10 matches for Levante UD before returning to Ajax, where he started his career.
