Beware in Valencia of flat scams

In order to enjoy your travels to the fullest you should always be on the look out for suspicious people and places that can put a damper on your fun. Many newbies in Valencia become a victim of flats scams, so here are some useful tips to avoid being scamed:

1)Urgency If the person letting the room or flat needs to have the flat let by the same day. If the advert has been published for a couple days the person can surely wait another day to settle all matters?

2)Avoids meeting in the flat Should the person try to avoid meeting in the flat or come up with reasons why you can not meet in the premises. Especially when exchanging money for keys. That should always be done in the flat, while double checking that they all fit OK.

3) In a rush be wary if the “landlord” seems in an unusual rush. People can be very busy, but when it comes to business you really should take your time and do things right.

4) over precautious when entering the flat Does he/she seem nervous when entering the premises? Looking around before going in the main door? Might be worried about other people seeing them entering the building? Well, if he is letting out the flat to more than one person scamming several people he should be worried of being seen letting out the flat again.

5) Wants the money straight away If he insists on having the full rent immediately you should really walk out. A deposit is acceptable, many landlords will ask for a holding deposit but only hand over any serious amount of money once you are sure that everything is kosher.

Some precautions you can take to avoid being a helpless victim of a scam:

1) Ask for a copy of his/her passport. Should something go wrong you will be able to identify the person and have record of their identity.

2) Ask for a copy of the tenancy agreement. Make sure that his/her name is really on the contract. You don’t want a stranger taking your money to have the real tenants turn up the next day chucking you out.

3) Get proof of payment of rent payment slips and receipts should be shown to you. Make sure that the money you are giving to the tenant really will be spent on paying the rent. Agencies can be very unforgiving should the rent be overdue.

4) Get references. Find out who knows the tenant, where do they hang out, how long have they been living in Valencia, are they planning any immediate travels out of town/out of country…
Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Valencia!
