El Carmen
Valencia Connect > Guide > Areas > El Carmen

The jumble of narrow streets which make up the area of  what used to be the Valencia old Arab quarter are full of shops, bars, cafes, restaurants, galleries and much more.  Every weekend, the Carmen sees an influx of weekend revelers enjoying the balmy evenings and pumping nightlife.  It can be a confusing clutter of streets if you don’t know your way around and there’s always a hidden plaza to stumble across and new restaurants to try.

The central Squares are Plaza de la Reina (two great Horchaterias here) and Plaza de la Virgin with its 12th century Cathedral and towering Micalet tower (great Plazas to people watch).   To the north-east of here are all that remains of the old city wall (demolished in 1865) – the Towers.  Overlooking the Turia park are Torres de Serranos (great views from the top here over the Carmen) and just off C/Quart are the Torres De Quart (you can still see their pothole scars from the Napoleonic invasion).   Just outside Torres de Quart are Spain’s first botanical gardens – a tranquil retreat from the traffic choked streets.

This area is a very popular place to live although rents are going up all the time and the noise from enthusiastic party crowds at weekends can be unbearable.
