Plaza Ayuntanmiento (Town Hall square) is considered the ‘central’ part of the city, the soaring façades of the main Post Office and Town Hall overlook the main Plaza with its fountains and flower stalls.  From here, it’s an easy way to walk to the main shopping area which spans C/Colon, C/las Barcas, C/Cirilo Amoros and the streets around C/Baron de Carcer (you’ll find Corte Ingles, Mango, Pull & Bear and other high street favourites here).

Heading North/East towards the river from Plaza Ayuntanmiento is the Mercado Central (open mon – sat, dawn til 2pm) in the ‘el Mercat’ / ‘El Pilar’ barrio (the latter is seen as a little undesirable with its token whorehouses and stray cat populations).  The Mercado Central is a wonder of smells and tastes with fresh, locally grown produce spilling over the stalls.  The building itself is somewhat disheveled, its main steps facing the entrance to what is known as ‘El Carmen’ barrio at ‘La Lonja’ (the old silk trading house).
